The word “OSS” was derived from the Japanese term ‘Onegai Shimasu’ which is a polite invitation like “Please, if you will”, or ‘Oshi Shinobu’ and roughly means “persevering when pushed” or “enduring under pressure”; values that are very much in line with the tradition of the most martial arts. OSS is now a term commonly used in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu to show respect and commitment, acknowledge a successful submission or takedown, or as a greeting or farewell. It’s often used at the beginning and end of a training session or fight.
